■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  study  was  to  investigate  the  frequency  of  Old  Testament  expository  preaching  in  Protestant  non-liturgical  churches  of  New  Castle  County,  Delaware,  and  to  examine  whether  or  not  there  was  a  relationship  between  selected  pastoral  factors  and  Old  Testament  expository  preaching.  In  this  study,  "expository  preaching"  was  defined  as  delivering  six  or  more  sermons  from  an  Old  Testament  book  in  the  current  pastorate,  using  either  consecutive  or  select  passages  from  that  book  (Bryson,  1995).
■520    ▼aA  self-reporting  descriptive  survey  instrument  was  developed,  pretested  in  a  pilot  study,  and  sent  to  281  pastors  representing  Baptistic,  Methodist,  Presbyterian,  and  Charismatic/Pentecostal  traditions.  A  total  of  146  usable  surveys  were  returned  resulting  in  a  55%  response  rate.
■520    ▼aFifty  percent  (50%)  of  the  respondents  reported  that  they  preached  six  or  more  sermons  from  an  Old  Testament  book,  as  defined  by  Bryson  (1995),  in  their  current  pastorates.  The  duration  of  a  series  ranged  from  4  to  52  weeks;  the  mean  was  12.4  weeks.  Chi-square  and  binary  logistic  regression  analysis  of  the  data  demonstrated  that  denominational  tradition,  the  type  of  seminary  one  attended  (conservative  versus  liberal),  time  spent  on  sermon  preparation  per  week,  and  the  attendance  to  membership  ratio  were  significant  predictors  of  Old  Testament  expository  preaching  in  New  Castle  County.
■520    ▼aThe  majority  of  the  respondents  that  engaged  in  Old  Testament  expository  preaching  reported  that  it  was  important  to  preach  from  the  Old  Testament  in  order  to  deliver  the  whole  counsel  of  God  and  for  leading  the  congregation  to  Christian  maturity.  In  contrast,  the  majority  of  respondents  that  did  not  engage  in  long-term  series  preaching  from  the  Old  Testament  said  that  they  preached  as  the  Spirit  of  the  Lord  led  them  or  that  they  were  not  "series  preachers."
■520    ▼aThis  study  represents  the  first  attempt  to  collect  quantitative  data  on  the  frequency  of  Old  Testament  expository  preaching  in  an  American  community  and  to  identify  selected  pastoral  factors  predictive  of  Old  Testament  expository  preaching.  The  data  presented  in  this  dissertation  may  be  used  to  inform  and  challenge  pastors  to  include  the  Old  Testament  in  their  preaching  plan  on  a  regular  basis  in  order  to  deliver  the  whole  counsel  of  God.
