■520    ▼aCyril's  of  Alexandria  (378-444  AD)  fame  arose  from  his  Christological  debates  during  the  Nestorian  controversy.  Although  significant,  Cyril  was  also  an  exegete  who  formed  his  theological  understanding  through  erudite  investigation  of  scripture.  He  documented  the  outcome  of  this  erudition  in  his  commentaries  that  constituted  more  than  seventy  percent  of  his  writings.  Most,  if  not  all,  of  these  commentaries  were  written  before  the  Nestorian  controversy  that  forced  him  to  shift  his  literary  attention  to  the  more  pressing  demands  of  his  church-fighting  heretical  teachings-especially  those  of  Nestorius.  To  remedy  this  deficiency  in  research,  a  closer  look  at  an  early  commentary  of  Cyril  is  expected  to  balance  and  fill  some  of  the  gaps  of  Cyrillian  studies.  The  focus  of  this  study  is  on  the  earliest  commentary  of  Cyril,  that  is,  the  Commentary  on  the  Gospel  of  John.  Cyril  described  the  commentary  as  a  "dogmatic  exegetical"  work.  Therefore,  the  research  focused  on  the  two  main  aspects  of  the  commentary,  dogma  and  exegesis.
■520    ▼aThe  first  step  of  investigation  is  to  suggest  a  date  for  the  commentary  under  investigation.  Therefore,  chapter  one  investigates  Cyril's  life,  education,  and  the  place  of  the  Johannine  commentary  within  his  literary  corpus.
■520    ▼aChapter  two  focuses  on  the  dogmatic  aspect  of  the  commentary  and  investigates  the  theology  of  the  Trinity  since  it  was  the  main  dogmatic  theme  of  the  Johannine  commentary.  The  main  points  of  discussion  are  the  imperative  belief  in  the  Trinity  and  the  interrelationship  of  the  three  persons  of  the  Trinity.  All  things  are  from  the  Father  through  the  Son  in  the  Holy  Spirit.
■520    ▼aChapters  three  and  four  focuses  on  the  exegetical  aspect  of  the  commentary.  Chapter  three  discusses  the  literary  aspect  and  investigates  some  elements  of  the  application  of  rhetorical  devices  used  in  the  commentary.  It  also  investigates  the  role  of  theology  in  applying  these  rhetorical  tools.  Chapter  four  discusses  the  spiritual  exegetical  aspect  of  the  commentary  and  discusses  the  aim  of  his  spiritual  exegesis,  his  terminology,  and  his  use  of  the  Old  Testament  in  interpreting  the  New  Testament.
