■520    ▼aChapter  Five  examines  the  relevance  of  the  paradigm  of  discipleship  for  the  Johannine  community.  It  briefly  discusses  some  major  theological  concerns  of  Judaism  in  the  first  century  C.E.,  followed  by  an  assessment  of  the  historical  context  reflected  in  the  Gospel.  The  study  then  employs  insights  from  the  social  sciences  to  understand  the  presentation  of  discipleship.  The  analysis  concludes  that,  amid  the  socio-pastoral  identity  crises  of  the  community,  the  paradigm  of  discipleship  as  a  covenant  relationship  redefines  the  socio-religious  identity  of  the  community  as  the  chosen  people  of  God.
