요약 : The dissertation reviews the usage of the laying on of hands in biblical, Jewish, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Greco-Roman literature and then applies the understanding gleaned to the New Testament practice of the laying on of hands to bestow the Holy Spirit.

요약 : In chapter two, the laying on of hands in the Old Testament is examined for its usage in the sacrificial cultus, in the consecration of Aaron and his sons (Exodus 29:19; Leviticus 8:22), upon the scapegoat (Leviticus 16:21), upon the Levites (Numbers 8:10, 21), upon the blasphemer who was stoned (Lev 24:14), in the ordination of Joshua (Numbers 27:18–23; Deuteronomy 34:9), upon Manasseh and Ephraim by Jacob for blessing (Genesis 48), upon Jehoash by Elisha (2 Kings 13:16), by upraised hands in corporate blessing (Exodus 17:10–13; Leviticus 9:22), and for healing through touch with Elijah and the widow's son (1 Kings 17:19–24); Elisha and the Shunammite's son (2 Kings 4:17–35); Elisha and the healing of Naaman (2 Kings 5:1–27); and when the bones of Elisha raised a dead man (2 Kings 13:21).

요약 : A survey is made of Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greco-Roman (especially the healing accounts of Asclepius, Apollonius and Vespasian) and Jewish literature (Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Philo Josephus, Rabbinic Judaism, especially noteworthy is the Genesis Apocryphon, 1Qap Gen 20.19–29).

요약 : In chapter three the New Testament is examined in detail, including the usage of the laying on of hands for healing in the ministry of Jesus and the early church, including the usage of healing agents such as spittle (Mark 7:33–34; 8:23–25; John 9:6–7) or oil (Mark 6:13; James 5:14–16). Exorcism and extraordinary miracles are examined—such as the clothing of Jesus proving healing (Mark 5:27–34; Matt 9:18–26; Luke 8:40–56; Mark 6:53–56; Matthew 14:34–36), as well as the shadow of Peter (Acts 5:15) and the handkerchiefs and aprons (sweat cloths) of Paul (Acts 19:11–12). An excursion on magic is supplied that discusses the relationship between healing and magic, including a discussion on the pagan Theios Anēr and its relationship to healing in the New Testament. The laying on of hands for the blessing of the children by Jesus is examined (Mark 10:13–16; Matt 19:13–15; Luke 18:15–17), as is Luke's mention of Jesus lifting his hands to bless the apostles (Luke 24:49–51).

요약 : The laying on of hands for commissioning or ordination is examined, including the appointment of the seven (Acts 6:1–6), which may have been inspired by the Jewish "Seven of a City," the commissioning of Barnabas and Saul (Acts 13:1–3), as well as noting the gesture was not used with the appointment of Matthias (Acts 1:21–26). Handlaying to appoint elders in the Pastoral Epistles is examined (1 Timothy 4:14; 5:22). It is contended that 2 Timothy 1:6 does not relate to ordination, but the bestowal of the Holy Spirit. The origination of the practice of handlaying for commissioning is discussed, including a discussion of the Jewish practice of Semikah for rabbinic succession.

요약 : The practice most likely originated in the Jewish context, but was strengthened by the healing practice of Jesus. As such, the early church most likely understood the laying on of hands as an efficacious gesture which transferred spiritual blessing.
