요약 : The thesis of this dissertation is that first century audiences could identify Rev 7:1-17 and 10:1-11:13 with other experiences of par3&d12; kbasiv (digression) heard in contemporary speeches and literature and described by Greco-Roman rhetoricians. Revelation 7:1-17 interrupts the series of seven seals before the seventh seal is opened and Rev 10:1-11:13 interrupts the seven trumpets before the seventh trumpet is blown. These passages primarily signal discontinuity with the surrounding material. As a result, they can be removed without loss to the narrative logic but with loss to the overall impact. Interpreters often explain these passages as "interludes," "parentheses," and "expansions," but not in terms of ancient communication.

요약 : Ancient rhetoricians describe similar phenomena as digressions, primarily used for emotional and ethical appeal. Hermagoras, Cicero, and Quintilian discuss digressions using the Greek term par3&d12; kbasiv for a passage that is unessential and can be removed without loss to the logic of the argument but simultaneously is essential to the overall rhetorical impact. Examples of digressions abound in ancient literature. Josephus uses the technique, sometimes unarticulated and other times articulated with the term par3&d12; kbasiv . Sibylline Oracle 1, Jubilees 23, Exodus 12, and Zechariah 2 are examples through which John and his audiences could have become familiar with digressions.

요약 : As with digressions in other literature, Rev 7:1-17 and 10:1-11:13 become more important for understanding the rhetorical goals and strategy of the whole book because they require additional effort to understand the connection with what precedes and follows, they develop the ethos of the author and audience, and they excite the emotions of the audience. These passages characterize John and the people of God in worship and witness in the midst of persecution. They evoke confidence in God's protection and promises at the point of maximum fear during the seals and trumpets, like islands of mercy in a sea of destruction. Analyzing Rev 7:1-17 and 10:1-11:13 as digressions reveals how these passages are a critical part of the strategy to persuade an audience to witness even when it may result in death.
