요약 : Repetition is a pervasive narrative technique in the Book of Revelation. Much of what has been written about repetition has been in support of studies of literary structure, composition history, and the debate over recapitulation. This dissertation extends earlier work with repetition by considering the implications of John's use of repetition as a narrative device in support of his rhetorical goals. The first two chapters set a baseline by reviewing the work done with repetition by six scholars in studies of the traditional introductory material mentioned above and by laying out a representative selection of repetition at each level of discourse from phonological elements to genre and form. The third chapter reviews salient narrative characteristics of Revelation and then extends the work done by Janice Capel Anderson with repetition in Matthew to the Book of Revelation. The final two chapters demonstrate how Anderson's seven narrative functions explain selected significant instances of repetition in Revelation. The fourth chapter traces the influence of the repetition of “to show” in the opening verses of major sections of Revelation (1:1; 4:1; 17:1; 19:9; 21:10b; and 22:1), and argues that it is plausible that this feature is deliberate and would have been perceived and appreciated by John's earliest readers. The final chapter is a detailed exegesis of 22:1–5 and argues that this picture of the advantages accruing to those who live near the throne of God and of the Lamb in the New Jerusalem is made more vivid and compelling by attending to the repetition that has shaped the reader's memories and expectation over the course of the entire narrative.
