요약 : This dissertation examines the sacrificial and cultic metaphors in Philippians and 1 Corinthians to provide greater clarity about the strategic function of these metaphors in Pauline rhetoric as a means of establishing an imaginative framework for ethical deliberation.

요약 : Three shortcomings of earlier studies justify this project. First, interpreters often make atoning sacrifice the meaning of the crucifixion of Jesus. Second, previous studies approach Paul's sacrificial and cultic metaphors as elements of discrete arguments without attentiveness to the corresponding entailments of the metaphors familiar to first century believers. Third, restrictive definitions of metaphor guided earlier investigations. These limitations cause interpreters to overlook the crucial role of the metaphors in the rhetorical strategy of an entire letter and to miss the usefulness of these images as a guide for ongoing moral reflection and practice.

요약 : This dissertation argues that the sacrificial pattern underlying Philippians 2:5-11 is that of the thank offering (or shelamim), metaphorically understood as self-offering to God. Furthermore, this image of self-offering is central to the counsels of the letter and is conveyed through resonances of sacrificial imagery (2:17-18; 3:17-18) and sacrificial patterns of life (1:20-26; 2:1-4, 19-24, 25-30). These images and their entailments also explicate Paul's apocalyptic worldview, discussions of giving and receiving, and his understanding of the close relationship between suffering and joy.

요약 : Likewise, this study contends that imagery of the Passover informs the narrative of the Lord's Supper in 1 Corinthians 11:25-26 and is the central component of a larger Pauline strategy to describe the moral life of the Corinthian community in terms of practices relating to the complex of actions, narratives, and values relating to the Jewish celebration of Passover. These practices include the scrupulous cleaning out of leaven (5:1-13) and the need not to be “puffed up” (e.g. 5:2; 8:1; 13:4); the Corinthians' call to holiness of life; the community as temple (e.g. 3:16-17; 6:19); covenant community and koinonia (introduced in 1:9, but continuing throughout the letter); the right practice of freedom (especially in 1 Cor 8 and 9); and the need for proper remembrance. The study also shows how Paul integrates these sacrificial and cultic metaphors into the rhetorical structure of the entire letter.

요약 : Finally, because the modern reader develops a keener ear for a body of metaphors whose referent is unfamiliar, the study establishes a ground from which the sacrificial metaphors of Romans might be reappraised as aspects of Paul's rhetorical strategy to unify the Roman house churches.
