요약 : This study applies Michael Polanyi's concept of latent knowledge to biblical echoes and allusions in order to elucidate the role of suffering in the fulfillment of Gen 1:28. Specifically, we explore whether a latent understanding of the relationship between Gen 1:28 and 3:16 as it is fulfilled in Exod 1:7 informs the articulation of the fulfillment of Gen 1:28 in the New Testament.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter 1 begins by exploring the role of authorial intention in biblical echoes and allusions. Chapter 2 examines "the blessing of the curse," as the curse of Gen 3:16–19 suggests that the blessing of procreation and dominion in Gen 1:28 would be fulfilled in a context of suffering. The Fall brings pain to procreation (Gen 3:16) and dominion over the earth (Gen 3:17–19), the two constitutive elements of Gen 1:28. In chapter 3, we see that the paradigmatic fulfillment of Gen 1:28 in Exod 1:7 is fulfilled in a context of suffering (Exod 1:12), specifically in Israel's work of dominion (Exod 1:13–14) and procreation (Exod 1:15–20). Chapter 4 shows the plausibility of this interpretation of Gen 1:28 and 3:16 in the rest of the Old Testament and early Judaism. Chapter 5 examines allusions to Gen 1:28; Exod 1:7 in the summary statements in the book of Acts (6:7; 12:24; 19:20) and explores the role of suffering in the progress of the Word of God in Acts. Specifically, the growth of the people of God in the face of suffering at the Exodus provides a paradigm for the growth of the church in the face of affliction. Chapter 6 explores how the image of God is restored in a context of suffering in Rom 8:18–30, alluding to Gen 3:16–19 and Ps 8:6 (cf. Gen 1:26–28). Chapter 7 then discusses the allusions to Gen 1:28 in Col 1:6, 10 to see if the context of suffering suggested by Gen 3:16–19 may shed light on the enigmatic statement of Paul's suffering in Col 1:24. Chapter 8 presents conclusions and a few areas for further exploration.
