요약 : Prior discussions of punctuation problems have not focused on MS evidence but on syntax, grammar, and theology. The discussion has been due in part to the MS evidence seeming to most scholars to be accidental rather than intentional. This omission of MS data led to the question driving the present research: What is the New Testament evidence on punctuation and segmentation and how does it help resolve punctuation issues in the text. The purpose of this research is to isolate the segmentation and punctuation data of selected Greek MSS of the NT in order to weigh their evidence on the segmentation and punctuation of the NT text. The hypothesis is that the Greek MSS of the NT contain a sufficiently uniform witness related to segmentation and punctuation such that their evidence can help determine the best segmentation and punctuation of many of the problematic punctuation passages in the Greek MSS.

요약 : The punctuation data were collected for the entire NT from the following papyri was and uncial MSS: P45, P46, P47, P66, P75, a, A, B, F, N, and W. The resulting data were classified into types of breaks and fourteen passages with debated punctuation was then examined further in additional Greek NT MSS. Chapter 1 included an overview of prior studies on punctuation and segmentation, all of which focused on grammar, syntax, literary structure, context and theology. Chapter 2 included a presentation of the methodology used in this study for the collection, grouping, and analysis of the data. Chapter 3 comprised an investigation of the overall data from the uncial and papyri MSS to find the patterns and guidelines that could be derived from the punctuation and segmentation data. The breaks were classified with following categories: speaker or subject shift breaks; paragraph breaks; quotation breaks; verb shift breaks; dative, locative, or objective breaks; time shift breaks; and miscellaneous breaks. Chapter 4 comprised the examination of fourteen passages in light of the evidence from Greek MSS, printed Greek editions, English translations, and commentaries.

요약 : The results of the study can be summarized as follows. First, an investigation of all breaks in six uncial MSS and five papyri was completed. Second, the overall rules of punctuation in uncial and papyri MSS were identified. The data demonstrated a high level of agreement in paragraph breaks in the uncial MSS. Other types of breaks placed at the ends of clauses or sentences did not show a high level of agreement among the uncial MSS. Third, the differences in frequency and shape of the breaks among the MSS were explained. Fourth, the examination of fourteen debated passages showed that MS information contains a sufficiently uniform witness to help resolve punctuation discussions on such debated passages in spite of some punctuation differences among the ancient scribes.
