■520    ▼aThe  words  and  works  of  Jesus  endure  as  a  literary  and  spiritual  source  preserved  in  the  biblical  record  and  deserve  close  scrutiny  from  literary,  inspirational  and  educational  perspectives.  This  study  identifies,  describes  and  analyzes  one  hundred  one  episodes  in  which  Jesus  used  questions.  Questions  are  examined  for  context,  focus,  results,  and  category.  Other  explored  factors  are  the  response,  size,  and  feeling  tone  of  the  audience.
■520    ▼aTo  classify  Jesus'  questions  it  is  necessary  to  develop  a  new  classification  system  by  merging  and  augmenting  all  previous  classifications.  Jesus'  method  of  asking  questions  extends  beyond  parameters  in  educational  literature.
■520    ▼aOne  hundred  twenty-six  questions  are  categorized:  Managerial,  34;  Challenge,  20;  Evaluative,  18;  A  Fortiori,  10;  Value  Laden,  9;  Analytical,  5;  Synthesis,  5;  Application,  5;  Suggestive,  4;  Apperception,  4;  Rhetorical,  4;  Definitional,  4;  Metaphysical,  2;  and  Dialectical,  2.
■520    ▼aOf  the  one  hundred  one  episodes,  Jesus  directs  questions  to  individuals,  26  times;  small  groups  of  two  to  twenty,  39  times;  medium  groups  of  twenty-one  to  one  hundred  fifty,  24  times;  large  groups  over  one  hundred  fifty,  nine  times;  and  to  a  mixed  audience,  three  times.  The  feeling  tone  is  friendly  69  times,  hostile  25  times,  neutral  four  times,  and  mixed  three  times.  His  questions  are  answered  forty  times,  unanswered  fifty-five  times,  and  both  answered  and  unanswered  in  six  of  the  one  hundred  one  episodes.
■520    ▼aForty-two  of  the  episodes  are  reported  by  two  or  more  Gospel  writers,  only  two  of  which  are  reported  by  all  four  writers.  Fifty-nine  of  the  episodes  are  reported  by  only  one  author:  twenty-six  by  Luke,  twenty-two  by  John  and  eleven  by  Matthew.
