요약 : This study is a literary investigation of the paradoxical interplay between the christological motif of authority and the discipleship motif of servanthood in the Gospel of Mark. This writer proposes that the paradoxical interplay is evident in the authority/servanthood paradox that Mark develops throughout the narrative. To trace the paradox in the Gospel, the writer uses the relevant features of reader-response criticism, narrative criticism, and rhetorical criticism. At the end of the study, the writer offers insight on the disciples' role in the narrative, the Messianic Secret, and a profile of the Marcan community.

요약 : Chapter one defines and describes paradox, and enumerates the various lines of evidence that show the presence of the two motifs and how they are paradoxically linked. Chapter two discusses the proposed eclectic, literary method of the study which highlights the readers' temporal experience of reading and their encounter with the dramatic (i.e., through events and characters) and verbal instances (i.e., through sayings) of the paradox. Chapters three through five present the actual investigation of the paradox in the three major divisions of the narrative. Chapter three explores the paradox in 1:1-8:21; chapter four works with 8:22-10:52; and chapter five investigates 12:1-16:8. Chapter six summarizes the method and result of the study and discusses three Marcan issues.

요약 : The study demonstrates that in the first major section (1:1-8:21) Mark emphasizes the authority side of the paradox through its various dramatic instances. In the central major section (8:22-10:52) Mark brings out the importance of the servanthood side of the paradox through its verbal instances (e.g., "saving"/"losing" one's life (8:35); "being first"/"being last" (9:35); "being great"/"being a servant" (10:43)) in the three paradoxical discourses (8:31-9:1; 9:30-50; 10:32-45). In the last major section (11:1-16:8) Mark highlights the highest expression of servanthood through the dramatic instances of Jesus' passion and death on the cross. Thus, Mark develops the authority/servanthood paradox throughout the Gospel to teach his readers that the greatest expression of their authority as Jesus' followers is found in their service to him and the people whom he himself served with authority.
