요약 : In the past, Psalm 118:22 has captured scholarly attention primarily as the central text in a group of stone testimonies collected for use in Christian apologetics. Chapter One summarizes the history of the testimony hypothesis and argues that within the New Testament Psa 118:22 is not, as commonly supposed, a stone testimonium. The chapter then turns from the question of origins to the question of function. The thesis of the dissertation is two-fold: First, the figurative character of Psa 118:22 plays an essential role in the rhetoric of the various New Testament passages in which it appears. Second, the recontextualizations of Psa 118:22 within the New Testament are not homogeneous but diverse, for each author draws upon the figurative language of the verse to create metaphors appropriate to its new context and purpose.

요약 : Chapter Two, a discussion of metaphor, lays the theoretical groundwork for the literary investigations in subsequent chapters. Chapter Three examines the function of Psa 118:22 in its contexts following the three synoptic versions of the Parable of the Tenants. Together with the allegorical parable, the verse serves as an apparently benign but ultimately devastating weapon metaphor. Chapter Four argues that within the apostolic speech in Acts 4, Psa 118:22 is a synecdoche for the entire Psalm and, in conjunction with the metonymns “name” and “power,” is employed to disassociate the apostles from magic and blasphemy and align them with God, the Supreme Benefactor. Chapter Five examines 1 Peter's use of Psa 118:22 along with Isa 8:14 and Isa 28:16 to construct social identity and motivate behavior. Here the verse grounds the metaphor of the Christian community as a spiritual house built upon the cornerstone, Jesus Christ.

요약 : The study demonstrates that the metaphorical nature of Psa 118:22 is integral to its function within its new rhetorical contexts. The authors' interpretation of the identity of the builders and of the building implied by the election of the rejected stone varies from one context to the next. In short, the five occurrences of Psa 118:22 within the New Testament are marked by considerable diversity of application, interpretation, and effect.
