■520    ▼aAlthough  many  studies  on  John's  pneumatology  have  been  published,  few  of  them  have  specifically  dealt  with  the  role  of  the  Spirit  in  the  life  of  discipleship.  The  first  chapter  of  this  dissertation  examines  the  previous  studies  that  dealt  in  one  way  or  another  with  the  work  of  the  Spirit  in  the  life  of  the  disciples  and  of  the  individuals  as  reflected  in  the  Fourth  Gospel.  It  also  addresses  the  issue  of  methodology  of  the  study,  which  is  mainly  narrative  criticism.
■520    ▼aThe  second  chapter  analyzes  the  relation  between  Jesus  and  the  Holy  Spirit  in  the  Gospel  of  John.  This  relationship  is  unique,  qualitatively  different  from  the  Spirit's  relationship  to  the  disciples.  The  coming  of  the  Spirit  on  Jesus  does  not  empower  him,  but  simply  reveals  to  John  (the  Baptist)  and  to  the  readers  who  he  already  is,  God's  unique  son.
■520    ▼aThe  third  chapter  examines  the  relationship  between  the  birth  from  above  and  the  baptism  with  the  Holy  Spirit,  and  the  moment  of  their  occurrence  in  the  disciples'  lives.  Thus  the  birth  from  above,  which  for  John  coincides  with  the  baptism  with  the  Holy  Spirit,  did  not  become  a  reality  during  Jesus  earthly  ministry,  but  only  after  his  glorification.  The  moment  of  the  disciples'  birth  from  above,  or  baptism  with  the  Holy  Spirit  is  described  in  John  20:22  where  Jesus  breathed  on  them  and  said  “Receive  the  Holy  Spirit.”
■520    ▼aIn  the  fourth  chapter  the  first  four  Paraclete  sayings  are  analyzed.  The  Holy  Spirit,  though  given  by  Jesus  to  the  disciples  on  the  occasion  described  in  20:22,  becomes  “Paraclete”  only  after  Jesus  had  returned  to  the  Father.  The  Spirit's  ministry  as  “Paraclete”  is  therefore  a  post  resurrection  ministry.  The  Spirit's  work  is  in,  for,  and  through  the  disciples,  as  the  Spirit  indwells  them,  defends  them,  and  testifies  to  the  world  through  them.
■520    ▼aChapter  five  has  as  the  starting  point  the  fifth  Paraclete  saying,  which  clearly  defines  the  prophetic  ministry  as  prophetic.  Studying  this  saying  in  the  context  of  the  first  century  Jewish  and  Christian  prophetic  background,  one  would  conclude  that  in  John's  community  all  Christians  were  potential  prophets.  Also,  there  is  evidence  that  even  some  passages  from  the  Fourth  Gospel  seem  to  be  the  product  of  prophetic  utterances.
