요약 : In late antiquity, the figure of a sacralized emperor who mediated between heaven and earth dominated the late-Roman and Sasanian empires. These conceptions of kingship, while often generating conflict over their four centuries of coexistence (224–651), also drove exchange, especially with regards to the main tools that the Roman and Iranian courts utilized to project their conceptions of universal rule: elaborate systems of ritual, and their cultures' visual, architectural and urban environments. This project focuses on a pivotal period in political and religious history, a period which lies at the crossroads of the ancient and medieval worlds and between the Mediterranean and the Near East. In it I analyze how the Roman and Sasanian emperors grappled with two fundamental problems arising from the intersection of religion and political power. Firstly, I investigate the process of creating and sustaining a system of sacred kingship. In this project I analyze how these empires continuously reshaped and reinterpreted their visual environments and ritual practices to legitimate the actions of the sovereign and project power over populations. Secondly, I ask what were the conditions and motivations that enabled two hostile systems of sacred universal sovereignty not only to coexist, but to foster cross-cultural exchange and communication even in the face of an undying rivalry. Whereas contemporary theoretical work on the subject of cultural interaction has dealt mainly with post-colonial situations of inequality and coercion, I examine the problem as it unfolded between the apexes of two social hierarchies, a surprisingly neglected subject. I argue that the Sasanian and Roman sovereigns encountered each other's cultural and ideological goods, expressed competitive claims, observed the resulting interchange and ultimately remodeled themselves in response to these visual and ritual assertions.
