요약 : Martin Luther King, Jr. has become the face of the civil rights revolution that reshaped the social and political landscape of the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. Although scholars have thoroughly examined King's role in the movement, studies have failed to recognize the pivotal role the people of Montgomery played in King's maturation and development. This dissertation examines the influence those committed to the civil rights struggle in Montgomery had on King, catapulting him to the forefront of a burgeoning national movement.
초록/해제
요약 : Prior to King's arrival in 1954, several men and women in Montgomery had already laid the groundwork for the protest that would coalesce in response to Rosa Parks' arrest in December 1955. This study demonstrates how the courage, sacrifice, and perseverance of the city's African American community brought King's leadership skills into the local and national spotlight. King provided a hope-filled message that resonated with both working class and professional African Americans to unify the movement. After the boycott the local movement faltered, leading to the conclusion that the boycott's primary positive legacy was national rather than local. This study incorporates interviews of the people of Montgomery and numerous monographs from boycott participants to paint a picture of the community during the 1950s. In addition, careful consideration of King's letters, speeches, and sermons help demonstrate King's contributions to the local struggle and his growth during his tenure at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. By examining his sermons, including a previously unavailable collection of over 150 sermon outlines, fragments, audio recordings, and manuscripts, this work makes a substantial contribution to better understanding the ways in which King's civil rights leadership matured and flourished during his Montgomery years. King's voice sharpens while in Montgomery, reflecting the shared struggles, challenges, experiences, and hopes of the people. King the civil rights leader was "born in Montgomery.".
