■520    ▼aProblem.  This  study  addresses  the  question,  is  there  a  relationship  between  selected  variables  of  age,  gender,  educational  level,  race,  employment  status,  and  marital  status;  and  the  selection  as  a  volunteer  in  the  Mission  Service  Corps  of  the  Home  Mission  Board  and  the  Foreign  Mission  Board  of  the  Southern  Baptist  Convention.
■520    ▼aProcedures.  A  letter  requesting  the  number  of  applications  received,  the  number  of  persons  assigned  and  sorted  by  variables  for  the  specific  time  period  (January  1,  1983  and  December  1,  1987)  was  mailed  to  the  Home  Mission  Board  and  the  Foreign  Mission  Board  of  the  Southern  Baptist  Convention.  This  information  was  stored  in  the  computer  data  banks  of  both  agencies.
■520    ▼aSince  the  study  was  concerned  with  describing  certain  characteristics,  descriptive  statistics  were  used  to  analyze  the  data.  The  variables  of  age,  gender,  educational  level,  marital  status  and  race  were  used.  Chi  Square  was  completed  on  each  variable.  The  variables  were  then  paired  and  Chi  Square  completed  on  each  pair.
■520    ▼aFinding  and  conclusions.  Taking  all  combinations  of  variables  into  account,  the  person  selected  more  frequently  than  expected  as  a  short-term  missions  volunteer  was  a  70-74  year  old,  widowed,  white,  seminary  graduate.  In  isolation,  the  category  of  seminary  graduation  was  not  significant  but  became  significant  when  paired  with  age.  There  was  a  slight  tendency  for  the  volunteer  to  be  male.
■520    ▼aThe  secondary  profile  of  older  adult  volunteers  was  the  55-59  year  old  college  graduate.  In  the  55-59  age  category,  this  person  was  more  likely  to  be  divorced  and  remarried  or  widowed.
