■520    ▼aAn  experiment  in  pastoral  leadership  was  conducted  at  the  First  Baptist  Church  of  Reseda,  California,  in  the  Fall  of  1990  with  respect  to  the  volatile  issue  of  abortion.  The  pastor  of  the  church--the  author  of  this  dissertation--used  his  position  and  pulpit  to  influence  the  thinking  and  behavior  of  his  parishioners  insofar  as  their  personal  and  political  orientation  toward  this  topic  is  concerned.  Given  the  scriptural,  spiritual,  and  moral  overtones  of  the  national  controversy  swirling  about  this  matter,  the  pastor  felt  that  he  could  justify  both  preaching  on  abortion  and  mobilizing  his  people  to  take  constructive  action  in  behalf  of  America's  unborn.  In  September  and  October,  1990,  four  sermons  were  delivered  in  which  (1)  various  passages  of  Scripture  (in  both  the  Old  and  New  Testaments)  bearing  on  the  sanctity  of  life  were  expounded,  (2)  specific  suggestions  were  given  so  that  motivated  listeners  could  get  involved  in  combatting  abortion  appropriately  and  effectively,  and  (3)  the  Judeo-Christian  ethic  on  sexual  morality  was  defended  and  applied.  Public-opinion  surveys  administered  both  before  and  after  the  sermon  series  revealed  that  the  pastor's  leadership  in  this  vein  did  have  a  definite  effect  on  congregational  attitudes  and  activities,  with  a  number  of  parishioners  changing  their  views  on  certain  facets  of  the  controversy,  registering  to  vote  so  as  to  make  a  difference  at  the  polls  on  Election  Day,  November  6,  and  so  on.  The  feedback  from  the  pew  convinced  the  writer  that  his  initial,  underlying  assumption  about  the  congregation's  receptivity  to  his  leadership  in  this  regard  was  valid  and  accordingly  that  this  project  had  been  a  success  both  in  conception  and  execution.
