요약 : This dissertation surveys the rhetoric on sexuality employed by the rabbis of late antiquity. After reviewing the literature on the history of rabbinic constructions of sexuality, I examine different areas of rabbinic discourse on sexuality: incest; sex between Jews and Gentiles; non-marital sex; homoeroticism; non-procreative sexual activities; marital sex. Rabbinic discussion of nearly all of these topics employ the same eleven rhetorical strategies: (1) Definition: who and what exactly is prohibited; (2) Categorization: creates and explores the boundaries and divisions of the different topics; (3) Liability: the conditions that must be met in order to be considered "guilty" of violation of the offense; (4) On progeny: the legal status or physical disposition of children of certain sexual acts or liaisons; (5) Association: grouping of sexual offenses with other offenses, sexual or otherwise; (6) Other: linking certain sexual activities to the "other"; (7) Divine retribution: God will punish either the community or the individual for commission of sexual offenses; (8) Danger: posed by sexual desire; (9) Pollution: sexual activity conveys ritual impurity; (10) Apologetics: for biblical characters portrayed to have committed unsanctioned sexual liaisons; (11) Punishment: punishment or threat against the proscribed sexual activity or liaison.

요약 : Use of these rhetorics varies both by topic and by rabbinic group. Palestinian and Babylonian rabbis employ different rhetorical strategies which are based on differing assumptions about sexuality. The primary difference between these two groups is that Palestinian rabbis are far more concerned with sex only as it has an impact upon marriage and procreation than are Babylonian rabbis. These groups also differ on gender expectations and their understanding of sexual temptation and control. Palestinian assumptions are closely paralleled in contemporary non-Jewish sources. The relationship between this rabbinic rhetoric and actual sexual practice of Jews in late-antiquity is obscure.
