요약 : This work probes the political implications of a religion based on a literal interpretation of a sacred text by reviewing evidence among Baptist sectarians in the upper South. It finds that politics based on such religion is not of any consistent secular ideology, but typically is adapted, like the religion, to meet local circumstances. The most important characteristic of such religion, its emphasis on local authority and its adaptation, within a broad concern for the patriarchal family of such authority, to meet local needs, is one of the most important characteristics of adherents' politics. These churches help those who lack political resources of their own to develop them on their own.

요약 : The work examines evidence from these sects on the leading political themes among a population it calls "Bible-based Protestant." Bible-based Protestants are those Protestants who claim to find all rules and elements of faith and practice in the Bible, but these common claims mask a wide variety of interpretation of the sacred text. The cultural concerns of Bible-based Protestants lead their politics in conservative directions, while their economic concerns often lead to populist politics.

요약 : The work presents two case studies to show possibilities and limits of Bible-based Protestant politics. In a local labor struggle in Tennessee, these sectarians were able to generate more religious support for a UMW local than organized labor's usual supporters in more hierarchical churches would offer. In a grassroots environmental movement in eastern Kentucky, these Baptists' traditional community concerns act to inhibit their participation in broadly reformist politics, whose need were demonstrated by approval of a hated landfill proposal.
초록/해제
요약 : The work concludes by drawing attention to common elements of politics among these groups and more widely recognized churches, and what these common elements mean for future analyses of religion and politics. Their common elements stem from a sectarian spirit animating such populations. This sectarian spirit allows adaptation to local circumstances, yet it also has an inflexible core. Similar tension between adaptation and tradition may be evident among other populations emphasizing a literally true religious text and the sufficiency of local authority for interpretation.
