요약 : Iconographic studies of divine images in the ancient Near East have flourished in the last two decades, concomitant with studies of the aniconic Israelite cult. Because the prohibition of divine images is considered a leitmotif of the Deuteronomistic History, this body of literature is isolated for a phenomenological study of Israel's divine images. Pertinent texts are examined based upon a tripartite division of Israel's socio-religious communities: the household, the local community, and the state. Our phenomenological study includes a semantic analysis of iconodulous terminology present in the DH, with an eye toward discerning the etymology and social world of these terms.

요약 : Our inquiry reveals that the primary focus of the Deuteronomists was the state cult; the authors/editors of the Deuteronomistic history take aim primarily at the politically and economically empowered. Both observations support the notion that the Deuteronomists were state functionaries. We also note that the eradication of divine images enhances the position of the Jerusalemite priesthood over and above other political factions. Though close readings of the literature, we see that lesser divinities, or preternatural beings, are a persistent motif in the literature and seemed to have a dominant position in the iconography of the cult. On the other hand, the DH offers little evidence for anthropomorphic images of the divine; rather, emblematic and theriomorphic images seem to have been the norm. Whereas most ancient Near Eastern cults had some type of iconographic representation of the chief deity, the literary evidence for images of Yahweh remains scanty. Nonetheless, we find that contemporary notions of Israelite aniconism (notions traditionally concerned with anthropomorphic images of Yahweh) must take into account the full range of data and recognize the possibility that various types of divine images representing various deities were present in Israel's traditions.

요약 : Through approach and subject matter, this dissertation contributes to the current scrutiny of Israel's cultic life and to an issue that dominated the writings of the Deuteronomists as much as it does the study of Israelite religion today.
