■520    ▼aThe  Bible  presents  the  United  Monarchy,  particularly  the  reigns  of  David  and  Solomon,  as  the  Golden  Age  of  ancient  Israel.  That  is  the  period  in  which  the  nation  of  Israel  reached  its  zenith  in  military  might,  cultural  glory,  and  economic  prosperity.  In  addition,  the  figure  of  David  is  critical  in  both  testaments  to  the  concept  of  the  Messiah.
■520    ▼aUntil  recently,  however,  no  extra-biblical  evidence  for  the  historicity  of  the  biblical  King  David  existed  before  the  intertestamental  period.  This  lack  of  evidence  was  used  by  some  to  assert  that  the  character  of  David  had  never  actually  lived.  David  was  seen  as  a  myth,  created  by  later  scribes  to  glorify  an  ancient  past  which  never  really  existed.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  examines  inscriptional  evidence  proposed  in  recent  years  as  evidence  for  the  historicity  of  the  figure  of  King  David  presented  in  the  Bible.  This  evidence  includes  the  so-called  Tel  Dan  inscription,  Sheshonq's  wall  at  Karnak,  and  the  Moabite  Stone  or  Mesha  Stela.  Each  of  the  middle  chapters  will  examine  an  inscription  on  the  basis  of  genuineness,  scholarly  opinion,  likelihood  of  referring  to  the  figure  of  David  presented  in  the  Bible,  and  possible  relationship  to  biblical  history.
■520    ▼aThe  final  chapter  draws  conclusions  regarding  the  weight  of  evidence  for  the  historicity  of  the  figure  of  David.  In  addition,  the  chapter  examines  the  implications  of  the  evidence  for  biblical  studies,  for  historical  studies,  and  for  archaeology.  Appendix  1  presents  the  Tel  Dan  inscription  in  the  ancient  Aramaic  script,  transliterates  it  into  square  Hebrew,  and  translates  it  into  English.  The  other  appendices  are  photocopies  of  rubbings  taken  by  the  author  from  a  full-size  replica  of  the  Moabite  Stone.  These  rubbings  are  discussed  in  chapters  4  and  5.
