■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  argues  that  if  by  means  of  the  analogy  of  faith  the  mysteries  of  the  Eucharist  and  the  Church  mutually  shed  light  upon  one  another,  then  specifically  one's  understanding  of  the  Eucharist  as  Sacrifice  ought  to  illuminate  one's  understanding  of  the  Church.  Conversely,  as  well  one's  understanding  of  the  Church  should  help  elucidate  a  theology  of  the  Eucharist  as  sacrifice.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  argues  that  the  language  of  sacrifice,  when  applied  to  the  Eucharist,  has  too  often  focused  on  the  descriptive  task,  seeking  to  demonstrate  how  the  Eucharist  can  be  said  to  be  a  sacrifice.  This  descriptive  focus  centers  on  the  cultic  dimension  of  the  Eucharist  but  underplays  the  ecclesial  dimension.
■520    ▼aInstead,  it  is  suggested  that  if  the  nature  of  the  Eucharist  as  sacrifice  is  to  be  more  fruitfully  understood,  it  must  focus  on  the  prescriptive  task,  that  is,  how  the  Eucharist  calls  the  Church  to  authentically  live  the  sacrifice  of  Christ.  An  adequate  understanding  of  the  Eucharist  must  see  it  not  simply  as  an  offering  by  the  Church,  but  an  offering    of  the  Church.  In  the  Eucharist  the  Church  truly  enters  into  the  sacrifice  of  Christ  whereby  Christ's  self-offer  becomes  the  Church's  self-offer.  This  requires  a  Church  that  takes  seriously  the  challenge  of  eucharistic  fellowship  and  the  demands  of  authentic  witness  to  and  union  with  the  sacrifice  of  Christ.
