초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation asks how the exercise of papal authority in Denmark affected the governance of the metropolitan bishops of Lund over their ecclesiastical province from 1178 to 1274, a time when Danish society was completing a transition from Viking “otherness” to full participation in Latin Christendom.
초록/해제
요약 : While scholars have long assumed that the powerful archbishop fell prey to the universalist papacy of the High Middle Ages, "Rome and Lund" demonstrates that, in the Danish church, the papacy provided consistent support for the jurisdiction of the metropolitan over his suffragan dioceses. Furthermore, in arguing that such papal favor was grounded in the exigencies of a church still on the fringe of an expanding Latin Christendom, this study contributes to a historiography on medieval European expansion into frontier areas and the transmission of authority from the center to the periphery.
초록/해제
요약 : The first two chapters examine the tenures of Absalon (1178-1201) and Anders Sunesen (1201-1223). For much of this era, popes buttressed Lund as a useful conduit between Rome and Denmark. These archbishops wielded considerable power throughout their province, interfered in the local affairs of their suffragan dioceses, and mediated the flow of Danish petitions to Rome. In the latter years of Anders's reign, Lund's papally sponsored hold on the province of Denmark started to decline, a trend completed under Uffe (1228-1252) (chapter three). During these years, rather than relying on the archbishops as the agents of Roman authority, the papacy preferred to use papal nuncios, mendicant friars, and a range of local judges-delegate to execute apostolic business in Denmark. Danes, for their part, dealt directly with the curia without the help of their archbishop. Chapter four closes this investigation by detailing the failed attempt of Jakob Erlandsen (1253-1274) to restore Lund's prestige and power.
초록/해제
요약 : As Denmark became more adept at conducting affairs with Rome, the archbishop of Lund went from being the papally sponsored prince of his province's church to being a mere colleague among many prelates with equal and direct access to papal jurisdiction. The consequence of medieval Denmark's final acculturation was nothing short of a complete reorganization of the structure of ecclesiastical authority within its borders.
