요약 : The liturgical life of Baptists has been overlooked historically, particularly where division and strife are involved. Yet, in spite of the myth that Baptists are an a-liturgical people, the theology and practice of worship has consistently been a variable in the ecclesial definition and redefinition of Baptists. This is especially true in a liturgical analysis of the Southern Baptist Convention's dissolution in the penultimate decade of the twentieth-century.

요약 : This dissertation is another contribution to existing literature documenting the Controversy, though this time, through the lens of liturgy. It describes the contentious parties involved in the Controversy, and it explains why these parties could not worship together or agree on worship theology and practice. Moreover, it documents how liturgy shaped disparate ecclesiologies among Baptists in the South: the "new" Southern Baptist Convention and its dissident siblings, the Alliance of Baptists and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

요약 : Using research methods in liturgical theology, liturgical history, and ritual studies, this dissertation provides a representative picture of what Southern Baptists believed about the theology and practice of worship before, during, and after the Controversy. It also illustrates how worship theology and practice were intentionally used to reinforce ecclesiological distinctives between conservative and moderate factions within the Southern Baptist Convention during the Controversy, and it demonstrates a gap that has long existed between academic scholarship and ecclesial practice among Baptists in the South. Finally, this dissertation suggests a series of principles for Baptists, the Free Church tradition, and the broader Christian tradition as they each seek to shape and study their liturgical and ecclesiological identities in the twenty-first century.
