요약 : Pelagius (c. 354-c. 418) has long been known as a heretic, for the most part because of the antipelagian works of Augustine and Jerome. This study attempts to evaluate Pelagius' thought from his own theological perspective, working from the premise that one can best be understood when appraised through one's major concerns.
초록/해제
요약 : Most recent studies of Pelagius recognize he was primarily a moral reformer with two major theological concerns. The first was the moral laxity within the Church at Rome. The second was the perceived threat of Manichaean asceticism, which on the surface looked very similar to the ascetic practices Pelagius taught as the responsibility of every Christian. Viewing Pelagius' teachings in light of these concerns provides a very helpful perspective of his thoughts.
초록/해제
요약 : The first chapter of this work provides an introduction, including an overview of recent pertinent studies concerning Pelagius. The second chapter reconstructs the theological environment of late fourth-century Rome, emphasizing the developing ascetic movement within the Roman Church. The third chapter provides an overview of Pelagius' teaching, with particular attention given to his call to the ascetic way of life. The fourth chapter then considers how Pelagius' teachings developed within the ascetic community of Rome.
초록/해제
요약 : The study provides several valuable insights. First, it provides a pre-conflict chronology of events that explains why the polemic concerning certain questions was generated. It also furnishes an explanation for the evident Eastern influence on the anthropology as well as ecclesiology of Pelagius. Perhaps most significantly, this study makes it clear that Pelagius was not responding in any way to Augustine's concept of grace. Pelagius was reacting to a different set of questions than was Augustine.
초록/해제
요약 : Because of the environment in which Pelagius found himself, he was primarily interested in humankind's appropriate response to God.
