요약 : Ecclesiastes has been the object of much debate in the history of interpretation, in part because of its challenging and apparently conflicting message. Such debate has often included discussion regarding its genre. In the interpretation of Ecclesiastes, relatively little attention has been paid to the Greek Ecclesiastes in LXX manuscripts. Scholars have not significantly focused upon the Septuagint text as interpretation of the Hebrew. Neither have they consulted patristic sources on this question in any meaningful way. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the testimony of such early interpreters with regard to Ecclesiastes' genre. When consulted, such interpreters reveal their view that Ecclesiastes is Hellenistic in nature, and, more specifically, that it is a representative of the Greek literary genre known as diatribe. The translator communicates this through alterations in the text which make its message more akin to diatribe. The church fathers show this view as well, by supporting and heightening the translator's interpretation and by employing a literary technique on Ecclesiastes which has links with diatribe.

요약 : A first task of the dissertation is to define “diatribe,” since its nature and very existence are topics of debate. To solve the dilemma we go back to ancient literature as it uses the term “diatribe.” From a consultation of the primary sources, it appears that diatribe is indeed a literary genre of the ancient world; however, the repertoire of this genre's characteristics is not static. Since diatribe spans several centuries and many authors, one finds an elasticity of traits within this genre.

요약 : The investigation next turns to those aspects of Ecclesiastes which could have led the Septuagint translator to view it as diatribal and, hence, cause him to emend small portions of the translation in light of that belief. To undertake this, a distinction regarding Ecclesiastes' form and content is made. Regarding form, diatribe's similarity to Ecclesiastes becomes apparent through devices such as the imaginary interlocutor, repetition of theme words, and other traits. Regarding content, parallel themes are a king who learns philosophy, the indictment of the pretentious/arrogant person, as well as others.

요약 : The next section of the dissertation explores the various passages in Ecclesiastes which the translator has slightly altered in such a way that they appear to resemble the style of diatribe. The passages show an enhancement of the imaginary interlocutor, vice/virtue lists, censure/character types, and rhetorical questions. Patristic testimony confirms and even heightens the bias of the translator.

요약 : Patristic sources provide further evidence. While the church fathers do not specifically label the genre of Ecclesiastes as diatribe, they appeal to a literary device known as prosopopea. This is a Hellenistic literary technique according to which apparently contradicting viewpoints are actually various voices within a book. Hence, this approach has much overlap with a major trait of diatribe, that is, the imaginary interlocutor.
초록/해제
요약 : In sum, the Septuagint translator viewed Ecclesiastes as a representative of Greek diatribe. In turn, he modified small portions of the translation to match his conviction, a strategy which the testimony of a number of church fathers confirms.
