요약 : The theological writings of the Scottish Episcopalian moral philosopher Donald MacKenzie MacKinnon (1913–94) intersect in the form of a corrective the claim of the liberal Catholic tradition in the Church of England to have forged an incarnational-sacramentalist consensus rooted in the construal of the church as the ‘extension of the incarnation.’ MacKinnon's work destabilized this claim by exposing the wide gulf which existed between theory and practice in that church and in his own Anglo-Catholic tradition within it. While refusing to ignore its actual crisis of identity and integrity, MacKinnon hoped for a church which would emerge from its Constantinian captivity to seize the opportunity for renewal presented by the collapse of Christendom. His work stands as a plea for a unified ecclesial belief and practice effected by means of a dialectical reconstruction of the tradition's understanding of the relation of the church to Jesus Christ and to the world in terms of the gospel. Authentic ecclesial existence must correspond with and conform to what was revealed and effected by Jesus along his way from Galilee to Jerusalem to Galilee. MacKinnon thus reoriented ecclesiology as a lived response to a Christocentric grammar of faith: the submission of the church to Jesus' contemporaneous interrogation, its creative obedience to the apostolic summons to look to him, namely an attentiveness to his willing embrace of his ‘hour’. He subjected this proposal to a range of epistemological, moral and ontological arguments which fund a realist orientation to the problem of the relation of Jesus Christ to the church and of the church to the world and undermine idealist arguments which convert deed into idea. Beginning in the early years of the Second World War with a dialogical juxtaposition of the Corpus Christi Mysticum ecclesiology and a substantially Barthian, gospel-normed doctrine of the church, MacKinnon came in his mature work to advocate extension of the concept of kenosis to ecclesiology, thereby emplotting the church within a soteriological-sacramental context, thus opening perspectives from its source in the cross-resurrection of Jesus on its transcendent ground ultimately secured within the perichoretic koinonia of incarnational-Trinitarian relations.
