요약 : This study examines religious controversies in the Jacobean Church of England. It argues that Jacobean ecclesiology was defined by debates in which English Protestants promoted rival “definitions” of the Church. Conformists—those writing in defence of the Church—argued that it was a political and spiritual association, annexed to the Crown, and also an institution with links to the early Christian and Apostolic church. Their critics maintained that further reform was required in order to restore the doctrine and governance of the Church to an ancient and reformed pattern. This study is situated within the historiography on the political and religious culture in early Stuart England. Where others have written of the political aspects of religious debate, conflicts between Protestant denominations, and divisions on doctrinal Calvinism, this study is focussed on printed debates in which contemporaries considered topics from conformity, clerical deprivation, episcopacy, ceremonies, and the jurisdiction of a “national” Church in the two kingdoms of England and Scotland. Its principal point of departure is its approach to printed primary sources—some 250 sermons, pamphlets, books and larger treatises, the majority of which have hitherto been overlooked by scholars.

요약 : It begins by examining the intellectual foundations of Jacobean ecclesiology, which was characterised by the use of historical scholarship, aspects of mediaeval political theory, and a re-interpretation of the Christian textual tradition in order to justify a monarchical, episcopal, and diocesan Church. Next, debates in the early Jacobean Church are examined, and it is argued that a tension between legal and doctrinal definitions of the Church lay at the foundation of contested Canons, articles and episcopal injunctions. Each side appealed to doctrinal and historical arguments, and divided also on the ecclesiastical sovereignty of Crown in parliament. The next two chapters probe into debates on episcopacy and ceremonies, and show the ways in which historical scholarship was employed to both defend and criticise diocesan episcopacy and ceremonial practice such as kneeling at communion. In both sets of debates, reformers mapped out a definition of the Church that was characterised by Presbyterian and congregational governance, and which called for ceremonial practice patterned on the first institution. The final chapter draws many of these themes together in an examination of conflicts between Scottish Presbyterians and English conformists. The same tensions over doctrine and law were evident, and made all the more striking by the fact that they served as the primary obstacle in the attempt to define a broader church of “Great Britain.”

요약 : The study concludes by suggesting that early Stuart England was home to deep ecclesiological divisions, and that these debates had an impact on politics. By shedding light on crucial and neglected sources, it contributes both to the historiography on post-Reformation England and the Jacobean Church, and the broader literature on the political and religious divisions that contributed to the outbreak of the English Civil War.
