요약 : This dissertation examines three of John Calvin's metaphors which are all used theologically, in reference to persons of the Trinity in the process of redemption. The result in his thought is a pervasive metaphorical model, understood as described by Sallie McFague in her Metaphorical Theology . However, Calvin takes it in a different direction. As a humanist and Reformer, he explores the Christian tradition and uses its metaphors to bring about its revitalization by affirming the validity of the spiritual experience expressed in these metaphors while providing their biblical basis.

요약 : Metaphor contributes to this because metaphor brings about a reconceptualization of a topic by means of establishing a tension between two otherwise unrelated fields of meaning. That tension is resolved cognitively in an interaction of the divergent fields of meaning of the metaphor, with important reference to the object of the metaphor. Chalcedonian Christology is a pattern of such a metaphorical tension that may fit the linguistic phenomena better than existing theories which do not balance the tension as well. It is argued here that the tension of Calvin's Chalcedonian Christology is expressed through his metaphorical reference to the Triune God in his theology, such that the divine-human relationship is expressed in a tensive model of the operation of the Trinity in the redemption of humanity.

요약 : The three metaphors that constitute this model are the fountain ( fons), the mirror (speculum), and the horse and rider (freno, frenum, stimulus, domare, etc.), which are all found in the De Imitatione Christi, a representative work of the devotio moderna which nurtured the French Church Reformers. Although Calvin did not expressly integrate these metaphors, we can view them in engineering terms as a single process model constituted by source, flow, and regulators. The latter involve the conscience in self-knowledge begun by seeing in the divine mirror, and its deepening by the bridle of the cross. The model provides a description of the operation of the Trinity in redemption that is expressed in the ministry of the Church in terms of the Word as mirror, fountain, bridle and goad, and the eucharist as mirror, fountain, and goad.
