요약 : Older portraits of John Calvin have often depicted a cold, rigid, logical dogmatician devoid of the experiential dimension of religious faith. In an attempt to correct this caricature, recent literature has identified alleged mystical strains in Calvin's theology. This study examines the nature of these strains by investigating two probable mystical precursors, Bernard of Clairvaux and the Devotio Moderna, and the extent of their contribution to the formation of Calvin's spirituality.

요약 : Our study concludes that Calvin was not a mystic in the narrow sense of the word, but his doctrine of the Holy Spirit and his use of “ unio mystica” do suggest a mystical influence on his thought. However, Calvin's knowledge of Bernard developed over the course of his career and does not reveal significant doctrinal influence. The thesis that the Devotio Moderna directly influenced Calvin is also doubtful, as significant differences between the Reformer and the late medieval mystical lay movement are identified.

요약 : Alternatively, this study advances a more nuanced view of the mystical strains in Calvin by tracing its root to Erasmus. The thesis of this study is that the piety of the Devotio Moderna was indirectly transmitted to Calvin through the Christian humanism of Erasmus. As a humanist reformer, Erasmus absorbed and transformed tenets of the Devotio Moderna by combining inner spirituality with learning. This is especially manifested in his concept of the philosophia Christi. Strong evidence for Erasmus' influence on Calvin includes Calvin's integration of piety and doctrine, as expressed in the epistemological and ontological dimensions of his spirituality. In contrast to the moralism of Erasmus, Calvin's doctrine of sanctification (i.e., the believer's imitation of Christ) is posited upon his doctrine of justification. The correlation of these two doctrines constituted for Calvin's understanding of unio mystica.
초록/해제
요약 : Calvin's notion of unio mystica, which is articulated in the soteriological context of his polemic against Osiander, is unique in that he holds in tension the objective givenness of his theme (justification) and its subjective appropriation (sanctification) while refusing to separate the two. In this way, Calvin was not only able to counter Osiander's teaching of a mystical, substantial union between believers and Christ, but demonstrated that the Christian life involves both the true knowledge of God in the revealed Word and the believer's appropriation of that knowledge in worship and service.
