요약 : Many churches offer wedding rites to non-members. Often, pastors are expected to officiate non-member weddings and would be questioned if they, as a rule, refused. Although churches often charge fees for non-member weddings, money does not seem to be the predominant motivation. The congregation is somehow invested in offering these rites, which rises from some as yet unarticulated view o 요약 : f the relationship between church (Christ) and culture. This project gathered direct feedback from both congregation members, and non-member couples who came to the Hudson Presbyterian Church seeking to be married. The intention was to discern the meaning that both parties imputed to the church offering weddings to non-members. The feedback was analyzed from theological, ritual, and ecclesiological perspectives to provide appropriate theoretical paradigms to help us better understand the meaning of offering this particular ministry. The question of whether or not to marry non-members was answered in the affirmative using, primarily, Martin Luther's two-kingdoms theology. The theological meaning of marriage itself was interpreted using John Calvin's covenant theology, and Karl Barth's understanding of the imago dei and its implications for God-human and human-human relationships. Then, a rhetorical construct was brought into play using Aristotle's three-fold categories of ethos, pathos, and logos, as a way to “do” weddings.

요약 : The power and meaning of weddings as rituals was explored. Weddings/marriage was explored as a “rite of passage” that benefits not only the individual, but also society at large by promoting stability and continuity.

요약 : Finally, an ecclesiological interpretation considered the implications of weddings as Christ and culture encounters, using Richard Niebuhr's well-known typologies. Weddings offered to non-members were seen as occasions for the church to transform culture. The issue of offering weddings to non-members then became a window into the wider relationship between Christ (church) and culture. How a church handles the issue of offering weddings to non-members may well be an indicator of how they view their general relationship with the culture in which the church resides.
