요약 : If the God who is wholly other is to appear, then must not God appear in terms that the recipient of the revelation can understand—according to the mode of the receiver? How can one think about the need for God to reveal in terms of the condition of the recipient without it constituting an imposition of those conditions upon God? While God appears in terms of the finite, God does not completely surrender to those conditions. Rather, God represents Godself while remaining fully God. Because some forms of representation, which are attributed to Calvin, are closely related to the immediacy of revelation and rely on a philosophy of presence, my goal is to outline Calvin's form of mediation and to examine the distinct epistemologies implied by certain forms of representation. In the matter of revelation “according to the mode of the receiver,” I will recall an axiom from the principles of accommodation, faith, and Incarnation as developed by John Calvin.

요약 : Calvin's theology deals with the conditions of possibility for the reception of revelation without positing the immediacy of revelation or claiming a universal, innate knowledge of God. Not only does Calvin avoid the pitfall of immediacy, but he also seriously considers the human condition with regard to revelation and knowledge of God, which points to the need for God's accommodation to the human capacity. For Calvin, it is faith in Christ through the Holy Spirit that is key to knowledge of God. In this investigation of Calvin's theology, Jacques Derrida will be a conversation partner on these topics, specifically regarding immediacy, the human condition, faith, and the Incarnation. While having reservations regarding Derrida's view of faith and the messianic structure, I argue that deconstruction offers interesting philosophical insights into the limits of epistemic abilities that compatible with Calvin's understanding of faith's knowledge.
