요약 : Most broadly, this dissertation, "Saving Difference: the Dialectical-Differential Structure of Calvin's Soteriology," is a study in the logical structure of Christian thought and doctrine. More specifically, in Calvin's soteriology I discern a logical structure with relevance to Christian thought in general and even to fundamental philosophical questions. By bringing philosophies of dialectic and difference to bear on an interpretation of John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion, I propose an explanation and relief of the tensions that threaten the coherence of Calvin's treatment of justification and sanctification by reconstructing these doctrines into three dialectical "moments.".

요약 : The dissertation begins by setting out Calvin's doctrines of justification and sanctification in the context of the Institutes, locating junctures at which conceptual tensions raise questions about the coherence of his doctrine. I also examine the issue of the structure of the Institutes generally, and whether that structure is dialectical. Arguing that Calvin scholars remain unable to reach a consensus on these issues, I turn to philosophical studies of Hegel's Science of Logic and Derrida's critique of Hegel. These studies set out opposed understandings of how parts cohere with a totality, and what the models of coherence imply for the nature of academic writing.

요약 : The second volume consists in a three-part reconstruction of the doctrines of justification and sanctification that effects a synthesis of Calvin's theology with the issues raised by Hegel and Derrida. The three parts are dictated by a fundamental logical structure that I discern operating beneath Calvin's doctrines, as follows: justification considered alone; justification differentiated from sanctification; and the interfusion of sanctification and justification. While this structure offers a way to make sense of the diversity of Calvin's claims, it furthermore suggests how the logic that structures this central Christian locus can integrate the contrasted views of Hegel and Derrida. By integrating modern and postmodern insights, this logical structure permits a rich sense of "systematics," one that correlates the differentiated moments that are essential to a full account of salvation with a corresponding diversity of text genres, practices, and community contexts.
