요약 : Few developments are more central to the project of modernity than the identification of freedom with human autonomy. This understanding of freedom is a significant departure from previous understandings, which held obedience to God to be essential to being free. While some theologians have seen this to be a positive, if incomplete, development, others have argued that the quest for human autonomy is antithetical to the human freedom offered in the Scriptures. Within such arguments, the notion of divine sonship is often proposed as the biblical alternative to the modern conception of freedom, yet this proposal has not been substantially developed, either at an exegetical or a theological level. The present work seeks to help fill this lacuna.

요약 : After surveying the historical background and present context in chapter one, I focus on the modern conception of freedom as it appears in the work of John Stuart Mill, whose On Liberty continues to be highly influential. Lying at the heart of his argument for negative freedom is a strong commitment to autonomy. Mill sees autonomy as the means by which the individual and society can develop and, consequently, he is highly critical of what he perceives to be obstacles erected by Christianity's demands for self-denial. I argue that his advocacy for autonomy ultimately fails to deliver what he promises, as it relies on a Eurocentric view of historical progress.

요약 : With this providing a backdrop, I turn to the biblical material. Starting with the Exodus and working along the contours of redemptive history, I seek to demonstrate that the Scriptures consistently identify freedom with divine sonship, an identification in which there is no tension between freedom and obedience to commands. This identification comes especially to the fore in the New Testament, in which we see the fullness of human freedom displayed in the incarnate Son of God. Moving from the biblical material, I turn to Calvin, whose strong emphasis on the Christian's filial relation to God (and the freedom found in this relationship) helps further synthesize the biblical material. I conclude by arguing that Christianity's conception of freedom is able to withstand Mill's critiques and succeed where he could not, because freedom is a gift that comes from without, rather than something independently possessed.
