요약 : The Albany Normal School, founded in 1844, was the first public normal school in New York State and the fourth such school in the United States. The two men most instrumental in establishing the school, Samuel Young and Calvin Hulburd, had a broad democratic vision of normal schools. Places at the school were allotted to students by assembly district; students received free tuition and a stipend. The first principal of the Albany Normal School, David Perkins Page, designed a complex and carefully articulated curriculum which emphasized both theory and practice, as well as the connections between the two. The students reviewed elementary subject matter, studied more advanced secondary school subjects, and developed pedagogical skills through practice in the classroom and in the experimental school. David Page and his staff prepared students to take a leadership role in teachers' associations and institutes by requiring students to participate in student associations and mock institutes. In his weekly lectures, Page enjoined his students to view teaching as a fundamentally moral enterprise. He argued that teachers had a moral responsibility to treat pupils fairly, and to pursue knowledge. He believed that unless teachers were themselves active and engaged learners, they would not be able to promote active learning in their pupils. The early success of the Albany Normal School is measurable. The Albany graduates did have lengthy careers in common schools, secondary schools, and normal schools. The overall average career length for the 428 men and women who graduated between 1845 and 1849 was 11.12 years; they also trained thousands of teachers in normal schools and teachers' institutes. The female graduates had longer teaching careers than their peers at Troy Female Seminary and Mount Holyoke Seminary, but in other respects they were similar: they were less likely to marry, and more likely to have smaller families if they did marry, than their peers. Many of the male graduates assumed educational leadership roles. One possible effect of coeducation at the normal school was the relatively small family size of male graduates. The Albany Normal School was apparently more successful than similar schools in Massachusetts.
