요약 : This dissertation examines how Luther, Melanchthon and Calvin used their respective organizing principles to resolve the biblical tension between (1) antinomianism and semi-Pelagian legalism, (2) a "workless believer" (i.e., the gospel without the law) and a "believing worker" (i.e., the law without the gospel), and (3) God's total sovereignty over our lives and human responsibility to prepare and persevere their salvation. For these Reformers, salvation can never be regarded, in any respect, as the result of our efforts or good works. Nevertheless, each of these Reformers relied on his own unique organizing principle to argue that we are responsible to receive God's saving grace, to do good works, to forsake sin and to pursue holiness.
초록/해제
요약 : Luther's organizing principle is his dialectical, antithetical statement, simul iustus et peccator. He used this principle to simultaneously affirm two apparently opposite poles. This principle, however, is rejected by both Calvin and Melanchthon as too paradoxical and obscurantist. Luther's principle leaves room for the necessity of theological paradox, but it minimizes the evidence of Christian righteousness.

요약 : Calvin's organizing principle of covenant theology explains this tension from two perspectives: the absolute and the conditional. He used these two perspectives to balance God's absolute freedom to bestow his saving grace upon his people and human responsibility to obey God's law. He believed that the organizing principal of covenant theology was more biblical and comprehensive than that of Luther.
초록/해제
요약 : Melanchthon's organizing principle is his concern for writing theology in a clear, simple and rationalistic way. His resolution to this tension occupies a position between that of Luther's and Calvin's. Like Calvin, he is not interested in resolving this tension in terms of Luther's paradoxical organizing principle. As a Lutheran theologian, he is unwilling to use or submit to Calvin's organizing principle of covenant theology. Because he was influenced by Aristotelian anthropology, his theology, especially in his later writings, leans dangerously toward a semi-Pelagian synergism.
초록/해제
요약 : The theological tension between God's absolute freedom to bestow His saving grace upon His people, and human responsibility to obey God's law continues to be a challenging issue today. In my judgment, Luther and Calvin successfully resolve this tension, but Melanchthon does not. Their resolutions illustrate the indispensability of a proper organizing principle in this most foundational and critical area of theology.
