요약 : In the sixteenth century, the Reformed Church of Geneva, headed by the celebrated Reformer John Calvin, served as a model for Protestant churches in France, the Low Countries, the British Isles and in some parts of Germany. Strangely, however, the daily practice of Calvin's parishioners and their attitudes toward their new Church have never been the subject of sustained study. This dissertation seeks to fill that gap, taking the liturgical forms of worship as its starting point. From there it moves to an exploration of the sentiments and attitudes of Genevans regarding the liturgy, institutions and teachings of the new Church. The dissertation begins with a discussion of Geneva's geography, government and history to orient the reader who is unfamiliar with the city. Part II looks at how the activities of the medieval Church, especially the daily rounds of prayer and the Mass, structured the day for the laity before the Reformation. Part III turns to the process by which the old system was dismantled and examines the ecclesiastical institutions created by the Reform, especially the Consistory, a sort of tribunal for enforcing the laws regulating faith and morals. Part IV is the heart of the dissertation. It constitutes a detailed exploration of the way in which Genevans experienced the regular preaching services of the Church, how they learned their prayers, and what sentiments they brought to their practice of prayer. These chapters also touch on some of the difficulties Genevans had in adapting to the new religion. Part V looks at how Genevans perceived the Reformation and constructed myths of the Reform, positive and negative, that helped them make sense of sweeping changes through which they lived. Taken together, the thesis offers an intimate picture of Genevans as they practiced their religion, thought about it and discussed it with others. It demonstrates that, with regard to religious matters, Genevans made their choices carefully and independently, and that within a short period, most Genevans had converted to the Reform and had generally understood and accepted its central teachings.
