요약 : In approaching John Calvin's exegetical writings, the unwary reader finds a mystery wrapped in a paradox, illumined by all-too-darkened mirrors. Is Calvin the fore-runner of modern historical-critical method? If so, how can his tendencies to see the whole of scripture as carrying a unitive message be understood? Or is Calvin's religious consciousness basically medieval, formed by popular piety from his youth, explaining the strongly conservative slant in some of his writings? This position will not bear the scrutiny of Renaissance humanistic scholarship, which sees great affinities to the methods and spirit of the Renaissance in Calvin's work. Can Calvin even be seen as the quintessential Reformer, carrying out faithfully the Protestant credo of sola scriptura in his efforts at interpretation and polemic? This conception suffocates under the frequent patristic citations in Calvin's commentaries. The implied methods leave the unsatisfying picture of a thinker suspended between the suspensions of the past and the anticipations of the future.

요약 : This dissertation proposes the categories of philosophical hermeneutics as more appropriate for understanding Calvin's thought, both in his critical reception of tradition and his attempts at re-framing the basic religious content of Christianity to meet the needs of the sixteenth century. Thus, the work of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur supply some of the analytical devices for exploring Calvin's processes. Beyond these tools, the differentiation between hermeneutical principles and exegetical practices or rules, received from Karlfried Froehlich, is vital to understanding both Calvin's continuities and discontinuities with the patristic and medieval tradition. Examining Calvin's Pauline commentaries through the application of these tools, Calvin's work is seen as a grasping of the Christian religio, re-framed for the historical circumstances of the mid-sixteenth century. Thus, Calvin sets out aedificatio as the heart of the theological task, and the driving force behind scriptural interpretation is the search for God's truth, always done in and through the faith community, most obviously seen as the visible Church, the congregation(s) of Geneva.
