■520    ▼aBy  offering  a  broad,  historical  examination  of  approaches  to  Spiritual  Direction,  this  study  brings  to  light  the  widespread  disagreement  regarding  how  Spiritual  Direction  is  understood.  The  extensive  literature  survey  reveals  that  Spiritual  Direction  has  been  approached  in  terms  of:  (1)  its  relationship  with  psychology;  (2)  its  activities;  (3)  the  viewpoint  of  pastor-directors  and  women-directors;  and  (4)  tradition  and  scripture.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  proposes,  as  a  solution  to  this  general  confusion,  that  theology  can  and  should  provide  a  basis  for  defining  Spiritual  Direction.  It  suggests  that  Spiritual  Direction  SHOULD  be  understood  theologically  because  theology  is  inherent  to  its  historical  roots,  because  theology  explicates  the  human/God  relationship,  and  because  theology  is  able  to  provide  specific  goals  for  the  process  of  Spiritual  Direction.  Furthermore,  a  theology  based  definition  of  Spiritual  Direction  can  offer  Protestant  theological  traditions  the  ability  to  approach  Spiritual  Direction  in  a  way  that  appropriately  reflects  their  distinct  theological  values.
■520    ▼aBeginning  from  the  premise  that  both  eucharistic  theology  and  Spiritual  Direction  deal  with  God's  relationship  to  people,  this  study  demonstrates  how  a  definition  of  Spiritual  Direction  CAN  be  extrapolated  from  theology--specifically  from  Calvin's  eucharistic  theology.  The  resulting  definition  of  Spiritual  Direction  describes  a  spiritual  director's  job  as  helping  a  directee:  believe  that  God's  gracious  promises  are  theirs;  actively  participate  in  a  Christian  faith  community  where  the  Word  is  preached  and  the  sacraments  are  celebrated;  make  Christ  the  central  focus  of  their  life;  learn  to  feed  daily  on  Christ  by  faith;  be  ever  receptive  to  God's  touch;  cultivate  a  reverence  for  the  integrity  of  the  physical  creation;  keep  on  educating  their  faith;  and  realize  that  holy  living  is  generated  by  gratefully  receiving  God's  gracious  gifts.
■520    ▼aThis  study  proposes  that  Protestant  traditions  can  formulate  their  own  unique  understanding  of  Spiritual  Direction  by  using  the  above  approach  as  a  model,  and  asking  themselves  how  their  theological  sources  answer  the  question  of  how  God  relates  to  people.  They  may  do  this  by  examining  their  own  eucharistic  theology--realizing  that  eucharistic  theology  is  one  primary  place  where  the  question  regarding  God's  relationship  with  people  is  asked  and  answered.
