요약 : This dissertation seeks to reexamine a specific historical question concerning John Witherspoon (1723–1794). Witherspoon was a Presbyterian pastor, the sixth president of the College of New Jersey (Princeton), and an American patriot. He was a representative in the Continental Congress and the only clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence. He is also touted as the individual who introduced the Common Sense philosophy of Scotland to American higher education. Specifically, this work contends that Witherspoon demonstrated much more consistency in his views about human nature after his immigration to America than has previously been suggested by many church historians. Many have suggested that Witherspoon sacrificed his commitment to the Calvinist doctrine of man's total depravity by incorporating an elevated sense of moral ability into his doctrine of humanity. This work seeks to demonstrate that Witherspoon did not experience a strange conversion when he crossed the Atlantic, but continued consistently to promote a Calvinistic understanding of human nature.

요약 : To support the dissertation's thesis the work establishes the Reformed doctrine of common grace as a key for a proper understanding of Witherspoon's use of moral philosophy. The work also contends that it is crucial to consider carefully Witherspoon's historical context and his various roles as minister, educator and politician before characterizing his role in American intellectual history. Some excerpts that address human nature from important Reformed writers are examined, including selections from John Calvin, Johannes Wollebious, Francis Turretin, and Jonathan Edwards. The works of Francis Hutcheson are examined and compared with Witherspoon's thought. Many key writings of Witherspoon are examined, with particular attention given to his Lectures on Moral Philosophy, Lectures on Divinity, A Practical Treatise on Regeneration, and Essay on Justification.
