- 요약 : Maurice Charland asserts that ideological or identity-forming discourse “requires a subject-as-audience who is already constituted with an identity and within an ideology.” Such a statement casts a shadow on the notion that the Declaration of Independence solely constituted the United States. This dissertation presumes that the American people were already constituted within a religious identity provided by the Calvinist preachers of the Great Awakening. Specifically, George Whitefield emerges as the heart and soul of the movement. This study claims that Whitefield introduced a “rhetoric of community” in 1740 that distilled the central elements of Edwardean Calvinism into a potent, comprehensible form that the general public could assimilate and understand. This rhetoric had the effect of loosening one's cultural and national connections to identity and recrystallizing identity within a community of awakened believers. The resultant conceptual system that emerged from this rhetoric of community provided the foundation for revolutionary rhetoric in the generation to follow. Consequently when Jefferson declared “We the people…” there were a people already there with which the declaration could resonate.
