요약 : The Reformed tradition has often. made doctrine the starting point of eucharistic theology. If we rightly understand doctrines about Christ and the church, we can rightly partake of the sacrament. Doctrine precedes ritual action. This trivializes ritual and exalts the power of reason. This essay sets the Reformed tradition in conversation with liturgical theology and ritual theory to move toward a fuller appreciation of the ritual dimension of the eucharist.

요약 : John Calvin portrayed the eucharist as a locus of God's activity. According to Calvin, in the eucharist God unites us with Christ and with one another through divine freedom, the work of the Holy Spirit, and because of human need for visible and tangible as well as audible. These themes were obscured by later Reformed theologians Francis Turretin and Charles Hodge, but they were recovered in the work of John Williamson Nevin.

요약 : Liturgical theologians assert even more strongly than most Reformed theologians that knowledge of God comes primarily through liturgy. The eucharist, as focal point of traditional Christian liturgies, is where God and humanity have their most profound transaction. We encounter God at table; subsequent reflection on that encounter constitutes articulated theology.

요약 : A weakness of both Reformed and much liturgical theology is insufficient attention to local practices. Ritual scholars such as Catherine Bell criticize general statements about “ritual,” urging closer attention to particular practices. I argue, therefore, that we must be cautious about claiming what the eucharist is and does in any one congregation. We must not allow predetermined “meaning” to blind us to the “doing” of eucharist in local churches.
초록/해제
요약 : A reading of local eucharistic theology in the practices of one congregation reveals a contrast between ritual “effacers,” who deny that practice affects their knowledge of God, and ritual “appreciators,” who affirm that practice does shape their knowledge of God. These two theologies represent tensive strands within the Reformed tradition that have existed since Calvin and Zwingli. In this day, we need to recover a greater appreciation for the way in which relationships to God and one another are shaped by ritual action, particularly in the eucharist.
