초록/해제: 요약 : Both Neo-Confucianism represented by Yi Yulgok and Christianity represented by John Wesley are serious about the belief in transcendence as the pivot by which the meaning and nature of human spirituality is defined. Each tao, of religion, as a distinctive way of envisioning transcendence, becomes a basis on which a particular hermeneutical framework for demarcating the scope and depth of human spirituality is grounded.

초록/해제: 요약 : In this sense, a religion is a possibility, a possibility for the fulfillment of selfhood unto a particular spiritual quality both in “who one is” and in “how one lives.” Thus, Yulgok's Neo-Confucian vision of T'ien leads Yulgok's spiritual selfhood to be shaped with “ch'eng (sincerity)” as the core, whereas Wesley's Christian concept of the Trinitarian God leads him to fulfill his selfhood with “love” at the center. A personal history of engaging in “one” religion rather than in another is, then, eventually, opening oneself to the spirituality circumscribed by the characteristic nature of transcendence envisioned in the tradition. As two distinct possibilities, the Neo-Confucianism of Yulgok and the Christian faith of Wesley are significantly different religions especially in terms of each tradition's shaping and forming power of human selfhood into one particular mode; sincerity for the former and love for the latter.
