■520    ▼aThis  historical  study  examines  the  extent  to  which  black  Southern  Africans  formed  a  partnership  with  American  Methodist  missionaries  to  propagate  Christianity  among  the  indigenous  people  of  Southern  Rhodesia  (Zimbabwe).  The  dissertation  is  limited  to  the  Methodist  Episcopal  Church  activities  in  the  eastern  and  northeastern  parts  of  Southern  Rhodesia,  from  the  founding  of  the  mission  in  1898  to  the  formation  of  the  Methodist  Church  in  1939.  From  the  time  of  their  arrival  in  1898,  the  missionaries  in  Southern  Rhodesia  relied  upon  African  people  from  South  Africa  for  preaching,  teaching,  interpreting  sermons,  and  translating  the  Bible.  By  1906,  black  Southern  Rhodesians  were  taking  leadership  roles  to  promote  Christianity  and  Western  civilization  in  rural  villages.  The  initiatives  of  Johannes  Chimene  in  Victoria  province  and  Nehemiah  Machakaire  in  Manyikaland  province  illustrated  the  partnership  that  developed  between  Methodist  missionaries  and  indigenous  people.  After  an  important  revival  in  1918,  the  Christian  mission  in  Southern  Rhodesia  was  accelerated  by  indigenous  pastor-teachers  who  were  no  longer  dependent  on  the  administration  and  spiritual  leadership  of  white  missionaries.
■520    ▼aA  secondary  focus  in  the  dissertation  is  the  attitude  of  missionaries  toward  indigenous  culture.  In  the  early  1900s,  the  American  Methodist  missionaries'  sense  of  superiority  towards  the  indigenous  culture  handicapped  them  from  forging  an  equal  partnership  with  African  Christians.  However,  missionary  attitudes  changed  as  they  learned  the  indigenous  language,  traditions,  and  customs.  They  discovered  that  black  Southern  Rhodesians  were  dependable  partners  in  the  preaching  of  the  gospel.  The  Woman's  Foreign  Missionary  Society  launched  education  for  girls  and  women  that  focused  on  empowering  them  with  a  belief  system  and  skills  that  would  transform  the  indigenous  society.  Consequently,  black  Rhodesian  women's  involvement  in  Methodist  women's  missionary  activities  greatly  accelerated  the  growth  of  the  Church.  The  study  concludes  that  the  planting  of  the  Christian  faith  among  the  indigenous  people  of  Southern  Rhodesia  would  not  have  been  successful  without  the  partnership  that  developed  between  Christian  black  Southern  Africans  and  Western  missionaries.
