요약 : This national study examined the significance of spiritual maturity and valued relationships on social support and life satisfaction among male religious. It also examined the association of the interaction of spiritual maturity and Vatican II profession on the particular locus of social support (“monastic/professed” vs. “ministerial/other”) perceived by male religious. Vatican II, or the Second Vatican Council of the Catholic Church, marked a shift in the vocational focus of mendicant Orders from a strong internal monastic life to its current emphasis on a strong external ministerial life. An added question assessed the association of having a most valued relationship inside vs. outside the religious Order on life satisfaction. A random sample of 350 male religious was selected from one mendicant Order in the continental United States (N = 522). The final sample size ( N = 251) was a direct sampling of 48% of the total population.

요약 : The NEO Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI, Costa & McCrae, 1992d) was used to measure personality in terms of the “Big Five”: Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. The Spiritual Maturity Index (SMI; Ellison, 1983), which operationalized spiritual maturity in qualities similar to psychological maturity, was used to assess varying levels of spiritual development. Social Support Appraisals Scale (SS-A; Vaux, et al., 1986) which measures perceptions of being valued and esteemed within three primary social networks of family, friends, and others was adapted to provide a measure of “professed” or “peer” social support. The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS; Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985) was used as a subjective assessment of personal life satisfaction. The study also included a demographic questionnaire.

요약 : Hierarchical regression results showed that spiritual maturity was a significant predictor of perceived social support (F (1, 237) = 20.662, p .001) and life satisfaction ( F (1, 237) = 13.205, p .001). No interaction effect was found regarding the influence of Vatican II profession and spiritual maturity on “peer/professed” vs. “other” social support networks. The study also showed that valued relationships inside the Order predicted life satisfaction (F (1, 236) = 4.722, p .05). These findings argue the importance of spiritual development and internal relationships as a way of enhancing vocational stability and satisfaction for male religious.
