요약 : The subject of this study is John Wesley's scriptural preaching. The research focuses on Wesley's use of scripture in preaching holy living to the church. Wesley's ecclesiological development led him to understand the church as the community gathered in fellowship under Christ, who through continual repentance and faith continue to grow in grace and in the knowledge of God and to seek the way of salvation. He held to Anglican doctrine wherein the visible church was the place where the pure word of God is preached and understood his as a call to preach scripture as the definitive word of God.

요약 : For Wesley, scripture contained the directives for holy living individually and corporately. His goal in preaching was to reform the church and ultimately the nation. His adherents became Methodists, whom Wesley urged to seek the means of grace for holy living individually and corporately. His scriptural preaching was highly successful in calling persons to Christ. He preached love of God and neighbor, evidenced in works of piety and mercy, and the scripture way of salvation through Christ. He anticipated that Methodist participation in parish worship would reform the Church of England, but his style of preaching was a departure from that prevalent in the church, and he and the Methodists were rejected from Anglican churches. Wesley's preaching did not reform the Church of England.

요약 : As some look to scriptural preaching to revive the church, Wesley's ecclesial homiletic offers an important lesson for the church. As a means of helping to shape individual lives and the corporate life of the church in holy living, Wesley's sermons prove that scripture provides the required directives. What preaching scripture cannot do, as the research into Wesley's preaching shows, is reform the church in a specific way. Wesley preached scripture in part because he understood it as a defining activity of the church, and he depended on the Holy Spirit to direct his preaching of scripture. This study suggests that the church needs to look to the Holy Spirit rather than to the preaching of scripture, to determine its shape and its future.
