요약 : If the Church is to be effective in leading faith communities toward developing healthy spiritual lives, then pastors must be equipped to minister in ways that address the spiritual needs of people in the local church. It was the intent of this project to inquire about spiritual practices, not with preconceived understandings of who God is and how people ought to practice their faith in relationship to such understandings of God, but beginning, rather, with what things people actually do, that they believe connect them to God. By beginning with this question, church leaders are best able to understand how such practices reveal what people understand about being in an authentic relationship with God and creation.
초록/해제
요약 : Seventeen semi-structured interviews were conducted with people from Open Door Metropolitan Community Church, a small congregation with a primary outreach to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered community of suburban Maryland. Through data analysis, patterns of activities began to emerge as practices, as defined by criteria dependant on both Alisdaire MacIntyre's work in After Virtue and its application to Christian Spirituality by Dorothy Bass and Craig Dykstra. These practices were: prayer, worship, self-sharing, art, music, relationships, giving, serving, working for justice, forgiveness and inclusiveness.
초록/해제
요약 : The data revealed patterns of spiritual practices that are cruciform in nature, directed toward God and Creation. Also revealed were common responses that raise concern for the local church, for example: the widespread inability to integrate sexuality and spirituality, a suspicion of scripture, and feelings of spiritual inadequacy.
초록/해제
요약 : What became apparent throughout the process is that participants reacted strongly against perceived judgments and exclusion they had seen or experienced from churches in the past and that they desire a faith community based on inclusion and acceptance.
초록/해제
요약 : Theological and socio-behavioral analysis includes discussion about primary theological paradigms that might be at work in both reactions against such exclusion and desire to build a more open and inclusive faith community.
