요약 : In New England the Methodist message of universal atonement was shaped by its engagement with the orthodox Calvinism that dominated the area's theological, social, and political culture. From the 1790s through at least the decades just prior to the Civil War, Methodists challenged the traditional interpretations of election and predestination with an Arminian theology that emphasized free will and the individual's cooperation in the process of salvation. This study examines over 600 Scripture texts, sermon outlines, and complete sermons by more than one hundred Methodist preachers serving in New England between about 1790 and 1850. Most of these sermons are in manuscript form, published as pamphlets, or printed in journals such as Zion's Herald and The Methodist Preacher. Recent scholarship has associated the growth of evangelical movements during this period with democratizing trends at the ballot box and in the market place that emphasized initiative, personal choice, and self-improvement; but this study uses the sermons to highlight the theological struggle between Arminianism and Calvinism in New England.

요약 : The first chapter traces the history of the Methodist incursion into New England, including a brief description of the founding of the movement in England by John Wesley; the organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church in America; and the labors of early itinerants such as Jesse Lee. The second chapter focuses on the preachers and their sermons, including their choice of Scripture; their scholarly sources; and their literary, cultural, and scientific references. The theological differences separating the Calvinistic or Reformed Congregationalists and the Arminian or Wesleyan Methodists as they appear in these sermons are detailed in the third chapter.

요약 : This study concludes that the sermons written and published by New England Methodists in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were more sophisticated than generally thought. While adapting some of the style and logic of established Congregationalism, these sermons continued the debate over the doctrines of election and predestination well into the antebellum period, suggesting that theology continued to be an important platform for public discourse in the formative years of the republic.
