요약 : This dissertation will examine contemporary dialogical preaching methods in light of dialogical preaching methods of Paul analyzed in Acts, selected passages in 1 Thessalonians and 1 Corinthians, and the history of preaching. The analysis of Paul's preaching will reveal four characteristics of Paul's dialogical preaching. Paul's preaching has its foundation in the authority of the Bible (Acts 17:2); intentionally directs listeners toward a pre-determined, persuasive purpose (Acts 18:4; 19:8); utilizes the giftedness and calling of the preacher (1 Thessalonians 2:4); and appropriately engages listeners without elevating their role beyond the Bible and the speaker (Acts 19:8-9). These characteristics of Paul's dialogical preaching will provide a framework for the subsequent historical analysis and a standard for critical analysis of contemporary dialogical approaches to preaching.

요약 : Chapter 2 analyzes the dialogical preaching of Paul by first examining Luke's use of diale&d12; gomai to portray Paul's preaching in the book of Acts. Then, Paul's self-description of his preaching in selected passages in 1 Thessalonians and 1 Corinthians will receive consideration in order to provide Paul's perspective on his preaching ministry. This analysis of Paul's preaching shows that Paul's dialogical methods were consistent with his monological communication. The apostle was consistent in the content of his message through the use of Scripture, in the persuasive intent of his message and in his presuppositions concerning the speaker and the hearers.

요약 : Chapter 3 places dialogical preaching in the proper historical context by presenting and analyzing two traditions with a history of interaction: Anabaptist and African-American preaching. Then, the twentieth-century homiletical turn toward the listener is considered with an emphasis on the works of Karl Barth and Harry Emerson Fosdick. Finally the major and minor contributors to dialogical preaching since 1950 are presented.

요약 : Chapter 4 analyzes the five major modern contributors to dialogical preaching: Reuel Howe, John McClure, Lucy Rose, Wesley Allen, and Doug Pagitt. The work of each contributor is analyzed in comparison to Paul's dialogical methods and in light of the history of preaching. The primary points of analysis are the role of Scripture, the purpose of the sermon, the role of the preacher, and the role of the listener.

요약 : Chapter 5 provides a summary of the conclusions developed from this research, offers suggestions for implementing dialogical preaching that is consistent with the practices of Paul, and offers suggestions for future research on the subject.
