요약 : This dissertation is a study of John Wesley's relationship with America throughout his lifetime. Wesley's relationship with America needs to be examined holistically because the relationship and the nature of the relationship changed over time as the Methodism grew, America changed, and Wesley's political and theological views evolved.
초록/해제
요약 : John Wesley's (1703-1791) lived from the Great Awakening until just after the ratification of the American Constitution. Wesley traveled to America, sent representatives to America, founded a church in America, and frequently corresponded with individuals in America. This project attempts to relate to the larger role of religious thought in the formation of English attitudes and debates regarding America, before, during, and after the American Revolution by exploring three major themes: Wesley's changing political understandings, emerging social ethics, and evolving theology.
초록/해제
요약 : Generally, Wesley was a reluctant participant in transatlantic events and dialogues. Wesley's interaction with America after his 1735 trip to Georgia primarily occurred as a result of being forced into action by an outside event or another individual. Wesley's experiences in Georgia were foundational for his entire later understanding of America. Wesley left for Georgia as an optimistic believer in the possibilities of the new world, but returned with a negative view of America and its residents. After Georgia, Wesley believed that Americans were rebellious and undisciplined. America also served for Wesley as a laboratory to develop his social ethics and political philosophy. As Wesley aged, America grew in importance for Methodism, but it also grew as a source of frustration for Wesley.
초록/해제
요약 : Wesley, viewed in connection to his relationship with America, was a frustrated founder who repeatedly attempted to create a new England in America and was repeatedly thwarted by a people who didn't want the structure he attempted to impose upon them. America, from Wesley's point of view, was Georgia writ large. America was Indians and slavery; Whitefield and Calvinism; sinful and rebellious. Wesley did less to create the Methodist Church in America than previously believed and Americans were more instrumental in its creation than previously realized. America had a larger impact on Wesley than Wesley had on America.
